Herron Rail Video proudly announces a new video series.
Major Engineering & Construction Projects Series
Item R-1 - NIMBA
-
A VHS video transfer from a 16mm film of the construction of a railroad to Nimba in Liberia, circa 1962. NIMBA was a huge mountain of almost solid iron ore that was so much in demand that a 160 mile railroad and associated facilities were carved out of the African jungle.
-
The film runs around 40 minutes + about 5-10 minutes of out takes which are mostly the railroad, including the Swedish rail car used in the opening ceremonies. Locomotives on the railroad include ex-L&NE Alco RS-2's, EMD SW's, SD 40's(?) and other export model EMD's. While this is mainly a documentary of the construction of this project, some train movements are included.
-
The program features clearing the jungle, building the highway and railroad, building the harbor and all related facilities, towns, mine, and associated projects. It has scenes of President Tubman and other dignitaries at the opening ceremonies. The program was written and narrated (in English) by Ralph E. Morse, a CBS reporter who also interviewed President Tubman for a Voice of America program. Filming and editing was by Charles Hegyes who was an employee of Raymond International, a major contractor of the project. Several trips were made to Liberia to film the show.
